Trackpad holder

Use your iPhone like a Magic Trackpad

A 3D-printable holder that follows the size of an Apple Magic Trackpad (160 × 114.9 mm) and the slope of its top face. The iPhone screen sits flush with the holder's top face, and the charging cable lies in a groove below the surface and leaves through the far edge.

Charging

A MagSafe charger puck sits in a recess in the floor and the iPhone snaps onto it. The cable runs in a groove under the iPhone and leaves through the far edge.

How it sits

cameralift-out notchfar edge · cable groove leaves (thick)your edge (thin)
  1. Lay the iPhone on its back, landscape, with the camera end in the far-left corner. Like a Magic Trackpad, the holder is thin at your edge and thick at the far edge, so the camera bump sinks into the thick part.
  2. The walls rise to the height of the screen, so the screen and the top face are flush. The top is tilted by the same angle as a Magic Trackpad (about 3°); the bottom is flat.
  3. Press the charging cable into the groove below the surface. It never rises above the top face and leaves through the far edge.
  4. Put a finger in the round notch at the front to lift the iPhone out.

Good to know

  • The size is not exactly a Magic Trackpad's. 17 of the 27 MagSafe holders are 160 × 114.9 mm, the same; Plus, Pro Max and Air models are longer phones and go up to 168 mm wide. Wired holders are 176–208 mm wide because the plug and the cable bend need room.
  • The height is raised by the phone's thickness. The top slope (about 3°) is exactly a Magic Trackpad's. For the screen to be flush the holder is 8–14 mm at your edge and 14–20 mm at the far edge (a Magic Trackpad is 4.9 → 10.9 mm). It differs by model because the camera and the MagSafe puck need room under the phone.
  • The walls never press the side buttons. There is a groove at the buttons' height. To press a button, lift the iPhone out first.
  • It does not take a case. The fit is for the bare iPhone.
  • Measure your MagSafe charger. The 15 W and 25 W pucks differ in size. The default is 56 mm wide and 4.5 mm thick; tell us if yours differs.
  • The wired plug length is an estimate. We assumed Apple's plug sticks out 24 mm from the iPhone and made the cable groove 6 mm wide, which takes cables up to 4 mm thick. Third-party right-angle plugs are not supported.
  • iPhone XS, XR and 11 series are not included yet. Apple does not publish drawings for them, so their camera size has to be measured. Ask us if you need one.
  • The foldable iPhone Duo is not supported.
  • Dimensions come from Apple's published iPhone dimensional drawings and tech specs. They can be off, so test-fit once.
